TORONTO -- The Blue Jays made a handful of transactions on Thursday afternoon, setting their 40-man roster in the process.

Toronto added left-hander Ricky Romero, right-hander Robert Ray and lefty Luis Perez to the roster. In order to clear room, infielder Angel Sanchez was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas and left-hander Les Walrond was removed from the roster.

The 31-year-old Walrond, who was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Nov. 4, is having his contract purchased by a Japanese club. The Blue Jays are still in the process of finalizing the details of that deal.

Walrond appeared in six games for the World Series champion Phillies last season, finishing 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA. The southpaw spent the majority of the 2008 campaign in the Minors, posting a 6-9 record with a 3.61 ERA in 28 games, including 17 starts, between stints with Triple-A Iowa and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Sanchez, who was claimed off waivers from the Royals on Nov. 3, hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2006, and he missed all of '07 after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on his right arm. Last season, the 26-year-old hit .247 with two home runs and 36 RBIs in 101 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha.

Romero -- Toronto's top pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft -- is one of a handful of pitchers who could be in the mix for a rotation job with the Jays this spring. Last season, between stints with Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Syracuse, the 24-year-old lefty went 8-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 28 starts.

Ray, 24, split the 2008 season between Class A Dunedin and New Hampshire. In 29 starts last year, he went 13-9 with a 3.61 ERA.

Perez, who is currently pitching for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League, went 5-12 with a 3.60 ERA in 28 games for Class A Lansing last season.
