ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are expected to offer arbitration to free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley before Monday's deadline.
Bradley is a Type B free agent. By offering him arbitration, the Rangers will receive a supplemental first-round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft if he signs with another team. The deadline is 11 p.m. CT on Monday.
The Rangers have yet to make a serious effort to re-sign Bradley, but he has received some interest from other teams. The Blue Jays may end up being the most serious. Bradley spent most of this past season as the Rangers' designated hitter, a job that is expected to fall to Hank Blalock next season.
Bradley hit .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBIs in 126 games and 414 at-bats for the Rangers this past season and led the American League with a .436 on-base percentage. But injuries limited him to just 209 at-bats in 2007 and that kept him from being ranked as a Type A free agent.
Players are ranked by their performance over a two-year period, and Bradley was 25th in a category that consists of first basemen, outfielders and designated hitters. The top 22 were ranked as Type A. If Bradley had been a Type A, then the Rangers would have received two picks as compensation.
Free agents have until Dec. 7 to accept arbitration. If Bradley accepts, then he becomes a signed player and remains with his team.
The Rangers are unlikely to offer arbitration to their other three free agents: pitchers Jamey Wright and Jason Jennings and infielder Ramon Vazquez.
