But a source close to the situation indicated Tuesday afternoon that it's highly unlikely such a trade would occur.
According to Stark, the deal would likely involve the Rays trading away a starting pitcher -- either Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson. However, that would also likely mean another team would have to be involved in the deal, as the Twins already have plenty of starting-pitching depth.
Stark suggested that Colorado might be a fit as a third team. The Twins are looking for a solution at third base and have expressed interest in Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins already. So far, the two teams have been unable to find a match able to bring Atkins to Minnesota. And there is a thought that if Tampa Bay is willing to move Sonnanstine or Jackson, the Rockies could be enticed to move Atkins since they need starting pitching. While the Twins have denied that they are actively shopping Young, there have been plenty of teams that have been calling to inquire about the outfielder -- including the Rockies. The Phillies have also explored what it might take to acquire Young since they need a right-handed hitting outfielder, but a Major League source indicated Tuesday that Philadelphia might prefer a couple of options ahead of Young.Kelly Thesier is a reporter for MLB.com.
