MIAMI -- The Marlins are one of three finalists seeking the services of reliever Derrick Turnbow.

The right-hander, who is striving to overcome injuries and control troubles, has been on Florida's radar for a while. The team's interest has been to see if it can sign Turnbow to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

The Sun-Sentinel on Tuesday reported that the Marlins are "squarely in the mix" for Turnbow, who will turn 31 on Jan. 25.

The Pirates reportedly also have interest in the former Brewers right-hander.

Turnbow appeared in just eight games for Milwaukee last year, logging 6 1/3 innings and allowing 11 runs. His best season was in 2005, when he saved 39 games.

Florida has a track record of resurrecting careers of relievers on the rebound. Armando Benitez (2004), Todd Jones (2005) and Joe Borowski (2006) all parlayed one-year success stories to larger contracts elsewhere.

Hot Stove

This offseason, the Marlins' bullpen has lost veterans Kevin Gregg (Cubs), Arthur Rhodes (Reds) and Joe Nelson (Rays). While the club has talent in its bullpen, many lack experience.

Matt Lindstrom is the front-runner to be the closer. Turnbow has 65 career saves.
