MILWAUKEE -- Catching prospect Jonathan Lucroy was among a trio of backstops invited to the Brewers' Major League Spring Training camp on Tuesday.
Lucroy, 22, will be joined by Carlos Corporan, a veteran of big league camp, and Martin Maldonado, in addition to the four catchers already on Milwaukee's 40-man roster.
It's typical for teams to load up on catchers for the early weeks of Spring Training and, barring an incredible spate of injuries to other players, Corporan, Lucroy and Maldonado will begin the season in the Minor Leagues. But Lucroy, Milwaukee's third-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft in 2007, will get his first taste of big league life after spending the 2008 season between the team's two Class A affiliates.
In 129 games at low Class A West Virginia and advanced Class A Brevard County, Lucroy batted .301 with 50 extra-base hits including 20 home runs, 77 RBIs and an .872 OPS. He bats and throws right-handed.
The Brewers have now extended Spring Training invitations to 12 players not on the 40-man roster: pitchers Joe Bateman, Chris Capuano, Lindsay Gulin, Sam Narron and Chris Narveson, outfielders Chris Duffy and Trot Nixon, first baseman Scott Thorman plus Jason Bourgeois, who is being listed as an infielder/outfielder.
Brewers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to camp on Feb. 13, followed by position players one week later.
