ARLINGTON -- Rangers pitcher Eric Hurley will miss the upcoming season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on Wednesday.

Hurley will not begin a throwing program for 12-16 weeks.

Hurley was taken by the Rangers in the first round of the 2004 Draft and was their Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2006. He reached the Majors last season and was 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA before missing the second half with inflammation in the shoulder.

Hurley had an injection in August but the shoulder never recovered. Instead he was examined this week by Keith Meister, who performed Wednesday's procedure, and Lewis Yocum, the Angels' team doctor, and surgery was recommended. He was a candidate for the Rangers rotation.

"We were hopeful that rehab would allow Eric to avoid surgery," general manager Jon Daniels said. "Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. I thought he could have impacted our club this year, but with the proper program, that should be realistic for the following season."
