Plans the A's had developed over the last two years to move from Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to the nearby city of Fremont were brought to a halt on Friday.

Team officials asked city officials this week to stop the planning process, which has been under way since 2007 and was to have created a $1.8 billion "ballpark village" in the East San Francisco Bay city, approximately 20 miles south of Oakland.

"I think it's terrible. Fremont's lost the best opportunity we've ever had," Mayor Bob Wasserman told the San Francisco Chronicle.

A's spokesman Bob Rose confirmed to the Chronicle that the team has halted the process.

"At this time we have decided to no longer pursue the Fremont project," Rose said. "We are regrouping and will have discussions internally about our future options."

The project was to have included a stadium with a capacity of 32,000-35,000 as well as 3,100 housing units and more than 500,000 square feet of retail. It was faced with traffic and environmental concerns, but the Cisco Field project continued to move forward until Friday's announcement by the city about the notice they'd received from the A's.
