Nomar Garciaparra reportedly has narrowed his choices to two: Playing for the A's or retiring.
Quoting a Major League source, FOXSports.com reported Thursday night that the 35-year-old veteran infielder is deciding between a one-year contract with Oakland or calling it quits after a 13-year career.
Garciaparra, who previously played for the Red Sox and Cubs, appeared in just 55 games last year with the Dodgers in his second year in his hometown of Los Angeles. If he were to sign with the A's, he'd provide a right-handed bat at the corner infield spots.
Garciaparra batted .264 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 163 at-bats for the Dodgers in 2008.
If Garciaparra does not sign with the A's, the club might step up its pursuit of shortstop Orlando Cabrera and reliever Dennys Reyes, sources said in the report. The report also quoted a source saying the Phillies are "fairly certain" they won't be signing Garciaparra.
