Padres sign 29 to one-year contracts
Kouzmanoff among those to ink deals, will make nearly $440,000
PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Padres took care of a little financial business on Friday when they signed 29 players to contracts for the 2009 season.
The pitchers who agreed to one-year deals were Mike Adams, Cha Seung Baek, Cesar Carrillo, Mike Ekstrom, Ernesto Frieri, Josh Geer, Wilton Lopez, Cla Meredith, Ivan Nova, Scott Patterson, Jackson Quezada, Chad Reineke, Jae Kuk Ryu, Mark Worrell, Justin Hampson, Wade LeBlanc, Cesar Ramos and Joe Thatcher.
Baek got the start in Friday's Cactus League game against the Indians in Goodyear.
The position players who agreed to deals included catchers Nick Hundley and Jose Lobaton, infielders Matt Antonelli, Everth Cabrera, Travis Denker, Edgar Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff and outfielders Luis Durango, Chase Headley, Drew Macias and Will Venable.
Because these are pre-arbitration players, the Padres could impose any salary they wished at or above the Major League minimum of $400,000.
Kouzmanoff, who has the second-most Major League service time of the 29 players who agreed to deals Friday, will make close to $440,000.
All players on San Diego's 40-man roster are now under contract.
