The A's signing of Orlando Cabrera leaves incumbent shortstop Bobby Crosby without a clear role. That leaves Crosby looking to move elsewhere, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday.

A team source told the Chronicle that there is little chance Crosby will be traded and that he is expected to serve in a utility role. Crosby told the paper, "I've never played anything except shortstop my whole life. Ever."

According to the report, Crosby's agent, Paul Cohen, talked to the A's on Monday and said that his client is hopeful a trade can be worked out.

"I was hoping to be Oakland's shortstop, and that's obviously not in their plans," Crosby told the Chronicle. "I've enjoyed it here, but the best thing for me is to go somewhere I can be an everyday shortstop. They've made up their minds, and I just hope they can give me the opportunity to move on."

A possible bench role could be lessened even more if the A's come to terms with Nomar Garciaparra, as has been reported to be near. The A's had put Crosby on waivers over the offseason, but no one put in a claim.
