GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- If Ozzie Guillen's words ring true concerning Bartolo Colon's start Wednesday against the A's, then it's an important Cactus League appearance for the burly right-hander in regard to breaking camp with the team.

But officially deciding on the much-talked about back end of the rotation stands out as just one of the important roster calls remaining, potential moves addressed by the White Sox manager on Tuesday. The team is expected to announce another round of moves on Wednesday morning, but if Guillen follows his plans, the 25-man-roster will be set sooner rather than later.

"I hope I can do it next week," said Guillen of assembling his final roster. "We can put the team together and they can stay together for that one week."

In order to reach this final destination, Guillen has to pick between Dewayne Wise, Jerry Owens and Brent Lillibridge for two slots. Corky Miller has the advantage at backup catcher, although Guillen would not rule out Donny Lucy from the competition.

The pitching moves all are predicated on Jose Contreras and Colon. Contreras will pitch four innings in relief Wednesday, after Colon throws three in the starting role. According to White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper, Colon was moved from a scheduled Minor League start to take the "next step" and see if they can get some more adrenaline pumping through the veteran in an actual Cactus League game.

Loosely translated, Colon needs to show better stuff to be thought of as a fifth starter option at the season's outset.

"To be honest with you, I don't think Colon will be ready because I don't know him," Guillen said. "[GM] Kenny [Williams] says don't worry about it and so does Coop, so I feel a little bit better, but we have to wait and see. I don't know him, so that's why I think he is not going to be. He has only pitched one or two innings. It's because of what I see."

"We'd like to think him, as well as Contreras, will continue to climb, not only with stuff, but also command of that stuff," Cooper said. "It's different for both of them because Contreras needs to climb with location. Colon's location has been OK, but now we hope his stuff continues to climb."

A starting rotation without Colon means a rotation with Clayton Richard. That addition also could open the door for a second left-hander, such as non-roster invitee Randy Williams, to join Matt Thornton in the bullpen.

Guillen also plans to put his regular lineup together more frequently. Look for shortstop Alexei Ramirez and second baseman Chris Getz in the middle infield, and after Getz's comments to MLB.com about wanting a chance to hit leadoff, Guillen might just take a look at the rookie.

"Is he going to be our leadoff hitter? I don't know yet," said Guillen of Getz. "What I saw in the [article], this kid has a lot of confidence in himself. I like it. So why not try it."
