PHOENIX -- Hall of Famer Robin Yount is not sure whether he would be on the Brewers' coaching staff today had his buddy Dale Sveum been named the full-time manager.
"That's a hypothetical. I wouldn't go there," said Yount, who dropped by Brewers camp on Thursday for the first time this spring. "He might not have asked me."
Sveum was joined by Yount last September, when Sveum was installed as the Brewers' interim manager for the final 12 games of the regular season after manager Ned Yost and bench coach Ted Simmons were dismissed. Yount served as the bench coach and Milwaukee won the National League Wild Card for its first postseason berth in 26 years.
It's hard to imagine that Sveum would not have approached Yount with a similar request this winter had things transpired differently. Sveum was among four candidates interviewed for a managerial gig that ultimately went to Ken Macha. Sveum took the hitting coach post.
Yount, meanwhile, is keeping busy in his new role as a juice magnate. Last summer he launched Robinade, a line of "old school" lemonade and limeade available at retail stories in Wisconsin. The product bills itself as "made the only way 'The Kid' would have it," with 100 percent natural ingredients, and is already carried by Roundy's, the largest wholesale food distributor in the state. Just this week, a new deal was struck with Piggly Wiggly stores, and Yount will continue to donate half of the proceeds from Robinade to the MACC Fund, which raises money for childhood cancer care and research.
"It's really starting to take off," Yount said. "There's people interested in it."
Yount planned to be in uniform for most of the Brewers' six remaining Cactus League games. He addressed the team on Thursday and solicited baseball tips from players that will be used for a "tip of the week" for kids on the Robinade Web site.
Yount was only half-joking when he said he'd be back if the Brewers need him for another playoff push.
"I'm hoping to have that job every year, though I'd like to get it under different circumstances," said Yount, who was friends with Yost. "Maybe I can be a September callup. That would be ideal for me.
"Last year, that was a blast. I got to come in for the last two weeks and be around all the excitement. I would have been there anyhow -- I bought playoff tickets -- but instead, I was part of it. It wasn't just for the fans; it was exciting for the players. In the big picture, there are very few players that get to experience that very often. It was a big deal for these guys."
