Nova was the 20th overall selection in the Major League phase of the Draft and was offered back to the Yankees for $25,000, half the selection price. The Yankees said he would be assigned to Double-A Trenton.

He pitched last season for Class A Tampa, going 8-13 with a 4.36 ERA in 26 games (24 starts).

Nova had no record and an 8.31 ERA in eight Spring Training games for the Padres, allowing 11 runs -- eight earned -- and 13 hits in 8 2/3 innings while walking four and striking out three.
