FRISCO, Texas -- Backup shortstop Tony Pena Jr. has made the roster, and the 11-man pitching staff has been virtually set, manager Trey Hillman said before Friday night's exhibition game against Texas.

Although Hillman did not make the moves official, he indicated that non-roster pitchers Brandon Duckworth, Roman Colon and Tim Hamulack will not be on 25-man Opening Day roster.

"Hamulack most probably will not break with us," Hillman said. "Ducky the same situation."

As for Colon, "it is doubtful," he added.

That would mean that non-roster pitcher Jamey Wright has made the club. Wright, a veteran right-hander, was a bullpen workhorse last year for Texas.

With Pena among the 14 position players on the roster, that leaves catcher-utilityman Brayan Pena and outfielders Mitch Maier and Shane Costa available for the last open spot. Of the three, only Maier has an option left.

That decision could be made on Saturday or go to the wire at Sunday's 2 p.m. CT deadline, just 23 hours before Monday's opener at Chicago.

But Pena is on the roster.

"I like his offensive approach, much better than it was at this point last year or even when he was a starter," Hillman said. "Obviously, we all love what he brings to the table defensively at a premier position. There's still a lot of value in that."

Pena lost his starting shortstop job to Mike Aviles early last June, when he struggled at the plate. Pena wound up batting .169 and, with his vision troubling him, underwent Lasik surgery right after the season.

This spring he has batted .269 (14-for-52) with two homers and seven RBIs. He also can fill in at second base or third.

"He goes into the season knowing he's not the starting shortstop, and he's got a better mind-set about that," Hillman said. "I kind of make that similar to John Buck. I don't want John being satisfied being the backup guy, I don't want Tony being satisfied backing up anybody at shortstop. We'll provide the reps we can at both spots, and those guys are team guys that will support the team regardless of what they're asked to do."

The pitching moves leave a bullpen of closer Joakim Soria; setup men Kyle Farnsworth, Juan Cruz and Ron Mahay; and middle men Robinson Tejeda, Doug Waechter and Wright.

The rotation was set earlier, with Gil Meche, Zack Greinke, Kyle Davies, Sidney Ponson and Horacio Ramirez. Ponson will not start the season on the roster, but he will be added before he pitches next Friday in the home opener against the New York Yankees. Ramirez will work out of the bullpen, at least for the first two games at Chicago.

Of course, the staff makeup could change if there is an injury in the two games against the Rangers.

"I'm holding my breath until we get on that plane again tomorrow, too," Hillman said.
