BALTIMORE -- According to a New York Times online story, Rays quality assurance coach Todd Greene, while still a player, contacted a doctor who was indicted in 2008 for illegally writing prescriptions for steroids and human growth hormone.

In the report, Greene is said to have testified before a grand jury that he was referred to Ramon Scruggs by his agent. At the time of Greene's testimony, Scruggs was being investigated by federal agents about players obtaining performance-enhancing drugs from him.

The story cited a report from an interview authorities conducted with Greene in 2005 in which Greene said he contacted Scruggs in 2001 because he thought "he was at a critical point in his career and, being married and having two kids, he was concerned that he would not be able to make a living playing baseball."

Greene chose not to comment on the story to reporters after Tampa Bay's 6-0 loss to Baltimore on Saturday night, noting that he wanted to concentrate on his duties with the Rays.
