Padres sign reliever Gaudin

Right-hander given Minor League deal after Cubs release

04/12/09 1:15 AM ET

SAN DIEGO -- In yet another moved to potentially bolster their bullpen, the Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Chad Gaudin to a Minor League contract, according to general manager Kevin Towers.

Gaudin will be in San Diego on Sunday to throw a bullpen session, Towers said.

Gaudin, 26, was released by the Chicago Cubs on Sunday after he struggled mightily in Spring Training. Gaudin allowed 19 earned runs on 26 hits in 16 2/3 innings this spring.

Gaudin, who was obtained last July from Oakland in the Rich Harden deal, finished the spring with a 2-1 record and a 10.26 ERA.

The Cubs are obligated to pay Gaudin $1.6 million of his $2 million salary for the 2009 season.

Gaudin was 9-5 with a 4.40 ERA in 50 games last season with the A's and the Cubs. He has a career record of 28-25 and a 4.45 ERA in the Major Leagues.
