Isringhausen takes another step forward

Reliever throws one hitless inning in first rehab start

04/21/09 11:43 AM ET

The Tampa Bay Rays came one step closer to fortifying their bullpen on Monday night, when reliever Jason Isringhausen made his first rehab assignment, pitching one hitless inning for the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits. He walked one and struck out two, throwing 21 pitches.

Isringhausen, 36, signed with the Rays as a Minor League free agent this past offseason. He is on the 15-day disabled list as he continues his comeback from September elbow surgery.

The 13-year veteran, who spent the past seven seasons as a closer with St. Louis, was limited to just 12 saves in 2008 as he battled injuries, but he had posted 30 or more saves seven times since moving from a starting role to late relief in 2000.
