SEATTLE -- Almost three weeks after adding versatile veteran Chris Burke to the organization, the Mariners on Tuesday announced that the 29-year-old infielder/outfielder had been sent back to the Padres for cash.

Burke was originally acquired from the Padres for cash on March 29 and was in Seattle's Major League Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.

Burke has started a game in the Majors at every position except pitcher and catcher. He spent the 2008 season with the Diamondbacks and saw action at six different positions, including all four infield spots. He played five different positions with the Astros in 2007.

He has spent all or parts of five seasons in the Majors with Houston (2004-07) and Arizona ('08). He was a part of the 2005 Astros team that advanced to the World Series.

He appeared in 10 games with Triple-A Tacoma at second base and center field, hitting .237 (9-for-38) with seven runs, two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.
