WASHINGTON -- Home-plate umpire Jim Reynolds was hit on the top of the head by a warmup pitch before the bottom of the seventh inning during Thursday's Nationals-Cardinals game.
Cardinals right-hander Blaine Boyer threw a warmup pitch that missed catcher Jason LaRue's glove and hit Reynolds in the head. Reynolds collapsed to the ground and was unconscious for a few minutes. LaRue and the Cardinals and Nationals training staffs immediately came to his aid.
"I told Jason I was throwing a cutter, but it never cut. It just went straight," Boyer said. "And man, he wore that right on his forehead. Like a gamer, he just stayed in. I felt terrible. I saw it hit square off his forehead and he took it. I was really just so worried about him. It's one of those things you just hear about. I hope he's OK and I hope he gets it checked out."
Reynolds was able to get up on his own power and remained in the game.
