Rivera not looking at extended DL stint

Catcher hoping to be ready when eligible on May 14

05/03/09 2:17 PM ET

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers backup catcher Mike Rivera doesn't expect to spend any more time on the disabled list than he has to.

A team off-day on May 11, combined with manager Ken Macha's plan to give all five starters an extra day of rest, means that Rivera is on track to return from a sprained left ankle when his DL stint expires on May 14, just as Dave Bush is scheduled to start against the Marlins. The duo has been paired since the start of the season in a move to give starting catcher Jason Kendall more regular rest.

"I'm getting there," said Rivera, who was injured Tuesday but has seen dramatic improvement over the past three days. "I'm still a little bit tender, but getting better."

Rivera took some swings off a tee on Saturday and has been throwing for the past three days. He played catch on the field Sunday morning.

Kendall caught Bush a few hours later in the Brewers' series finale against Arizona.
