Braun bags NL Player of Week honors

Brewers slugger takes home award for first time

05/11/09 2:30 PM ET

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is the National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America, after batting .458 for the period of May 3 to Sunday and leading the league with 12 RBIs.

Braun's three homers for the week included his second career grand slam on Wednesday at Cincinnati, a game in which he drove in a career-high six runs.

The 2008 All-Star posted four multi-RBI games and four multihit games last week.

Braun prevailed over a crowded field of candidates for weekly honors, led by Arizona outfielder Justin Upton (.423, 17-game hitting streak), the Dodgers battery of catcher Russell Martin (.500) and left-hander Eric Stults (2-0, 1.23), Houston's Carlos Lee (.538) and Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who batted .469 while extending his hitting streak to 28 games.

Also receiving consideration were the Rockies' Todd Helton, St. Louis' Skip Schumaker, the Marlins' Hanley Ramirez, and the Mets' Carlos Delgado, David Wright and Johan Santana.
