Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson is battling prostate cancer, the former Orioles legend revealed Tuesday.Robinson, 71, said the cancer was spotted early and that he has undergone successful treatment for the ailment.
"It was diagnosed very early and I underwent 39 radiation treatments," Robinson said Tuesday at a luncheon for the American Cancer Society in Baltimore, according to The Baltimore Sun. "I feel healthy and fine and I'm grateful that I was vigilant about my health."
Robinson said he was thankful for the care of his wife, Connie, and the fact that he is able to afford high-quality care in a city with top-notch facilities.
"I've been very fortunate to have an incredible wife and family to support me, the finances to get medical care and the good fortune to be in my adopted hometown of Baltimore, which boasts the best medical care you can get anywhere in the world," Robinson said.
"When you are diagnosed with cancer, your only focus should be on getting better. If you don't know where to go for help, you can't get it. If you don't know what questions to ask, you can't get the answers."
Robinson, a 15-time American League All-Star and 16-time Gold Glove-winning third baseman, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
