McDonald, the top overall selection in the 1989 First-Year Player Draft, needed just two appearances in the Minor Leagues before he made his big league debut. The right-hander struggled at first, but eventually built himself into a capable big league starter before ultimately being sidetracked by multiple shoulder injuries.
McDonald, a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, had his career cut short before his 30th birthday and finished his big league tenure with a 78-70 record and a 3.91 ERA.
