Cox, Braves to be featured on TWIB
Skipper's career, club's pitching staff to be showcased
It's been quite a week for Braves manager Bobby Cox. After recording his 2,000th win as manager of the Braves on Tuesday, Cox was honored with a pregame ceremony before Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
On Saturday, he will be featured on FOX's "This Week in Baseball" as the weekly show profiles the Braves in this week's episode. The show will air at 3:30 p.m. ET.
In addition to the segment on Cox, the show will discuss the Braves' talent for developing young talent in light of this week's First-Year Player Draft. There will also be a profile of the pitching staff.
"TWIB goes back and forth between being based on themes and being based on teams," said the show's producer, Matt Anderton. "Because of the Draft this week, the Braves seemed like a good fit due to their reputation for farming talent. They've always been great for providing us access."
The highlight of the show may be the feature on Cox. It will cover his 50 years in baseball, including his playing days with the Yankees and his managerial career in the Minors.
There will even be footage of Cox in action with the Yankees, a sight that hasn't been seen by too many baseball fans who didn't see the third baseman play in 1968-69.
"Because our library is so extensive, we have footage from way back," Anderton said. "We should have some footage of Cox in the field. I think he's turning a double play. It's fun to dig that footage up."
Although Anderton didn't know for sure that Cox would earn his 2,000th Braves win this week when he selected the Braves for this week's show, he knew it was a possibility. The fact that the milestone occurred the same week as the show's airing fit in perfectly with the segment.
"We just wanted to show how long he's been involved with baseball and especially all the greatness that he's accomplished with the Braves," Anderton said.
The segment on the Braves pitching staff will feature newcomers such as Derek Lowe and Javier Vazquez. Anderton said the rotation was appealing because it draws comparisons to the great past rotations of the Braves that included John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine.
"They've had some great additions and a young guy like Jair Jurrjens," Anderton said. "It definitely brings about memories of those other great rotations."
Braves players Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur and Chipper Jones will be featured in interviews, as well as Cox and bullpen coach Eddie Perez.
