Hampton to DL with strained left groin
Backe to start in lefty's place Thursday; Wright recalled
ARLINGTON -- The Astros placed left-hander Mike Hampton on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin following Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers.
Brandon Backe will take Hampton's spot in the rotation and pitch Thursday at Texas.
Hampton is 4-5 with a 4.70 ERA in 12 starts this year for the Astros. The move is retroactive to June 14, and Hampton will be eligible to come off the DL on June 29. The club recalled left-handed reliever Wesley Wright from Triple-A Round Rock to take Hampton's roster spot.
Hampton strained his groin on the last pitch he threw Friday against the D-backs in Arizona.
Backe missed two months with a strained ribcage muscle and has made four relief appearances this year, posting a 12.00 ERA. He's allowed 17 hits and 12 runs in nine innings.
