Torre maps out Manny's stint in Minors

Dodgers slugger to move to Class A over weekend

06/24/09 8:04 PM ET

CHICAGO -- Dodgers manager Joe Torre laid out the tentative schedule for suspended outfielder Manny Ramirez's Minor League assignment Wednesday.

The assignment began Tuesday night in Albuquerque, where Ramirez is expected to play Wednesday and Thursday. He will take Friday off to travel to Southern California and play for Class A Inland Empire from Saturday-Tuesday. He will be off Wednesday and rejoin the Dodgers on Thursday in San Diego with his 50-game suspension for violating the Major League Baseball drug policy served.

"He got his workout in and that's all I'm concerned with," Torre said of Ramirez's 0-for-2 debut on Tuesday. "He surprised me that he played the outfield. I thought he would DH. But that sounds like him. He'd rather play. This spring, when he had the leg [hamstring] stuff, we wanted him to take it easy with the DH and he said he'd rather play."

Torre has said Ramirez will reclaim his starting left-field job when he rejoins the club with Juan Pierre, who has started each game in left field in place of Ramirez, being rotated into center field as a fourth outfielder.
