Mariners GM visits with Ackley's advisor
Zduriencik meets Boras, but no contract talks yet
LOS ANGELES -- General manager Jack Zduriencik and Scott Boras, the advisor for No. 1 Draft choice Dustin Ackley, had dinner at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night and then sat side-by-side in the first row for most of the game, discussing several topics. But there were no contract talks regarding the University of North Carolina star. "Our meeting was very cordial," Zduriencik said on Sunday, "but it wasn't anything in depth. It was very professional and we talked about several things, including Ackley. But this was neither the setting nor the timing [for contract discussions]." The Mariners have until Aug. 17 to reach agreement on a contract with the first baseman-outfielder. If that doesn't happen, Ackley would return to the Draft next year and Seattle would receive compensation. "We would like to get him signed," Zduriencik said. Ackley, 21, led the Tar Heels into the College World Series for the fourth consecutive season and became the all-time hits leader in the CWS. He batted at least .400 in all three of his seasons at UNC and is the first three-time All-America selection in school history.
