Rolen expected to be OK after beaning

Infielder walks off under own power, is replaced by Rosales

08/02/09 5:38 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Reds third baseman Scott Rolen left Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Rockies in the seventh inning after he was hit in the helmet with a pitch by Rockies right-hander Jason Marquis.

Rolen walked off under his own power and appeared OK as he left the field. He was 0-for-2 in his second game with the Reds. Adam Rosales replaced Rolen at third base.

After the game, Rolen was in good spirits and said he would be evaluated later in the evening to make sure he was OK. He said he does not expect to receive an MRI and is ready to play Monday against the Cubs.

"The last thing I remember is waking up," Rolen said jokingly. "It brought up my on-base percentage."

Rolen was hit by a 92-mph four-seam fastball from Marquis.

Rolen said Marquis, who is a former teammate of Rolen with the Cardinals, talked to Rolen to make sure he was fine. Marquis appeared visibly upset about hitting Rolen. Rolen gestured toward Marquis as he walked off the field to show him that he was OK.

"It affected us all because of the respect that we have for that player," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of the beaning. "You saw Marquis' reaction. We all just kind of took a deep breath, because obviously the pitch just got away from him. That's a class, class player, a great professional and a great Major League player. I guarantee you every player on both sides of the field did that."
