Rockies closer to signing O'Dowd, Tracy

Deal for general manager expected to be finalized first

10/20/09 1:49 PM ET

DENVER -- The Rockies are moving closer to signing general manager Dan O'Dowd and manager Jim Tracy to contract extensions.

A source close to the contract talks told MLB.com that it's likely O'Dowd will be signed first. This should happen soon, with Tracy to follow.

The deals for O'Dowd, who has been in his position since the end of the 1999 season, and Tracy, who joined the club as bench coach last winter and led a dramatic turnaround after replacing Clint Hurdle on May 29, will need to be in place before the Rockies can follow through on plans to formally extend offers to the coaching staff.

Under Tracy, considered a favorite for the National League Manager of the Year Award, the Rockies went 74-42 during the regular season and made the playoffs as the NL Wild Card before falling to the Phillies in the NL Division Series, 3-1.
