The Royals announced Thursday they had hired long-time Indians and Reds staffer Nick Kenney to be the club's head athletic trainer.Kenny spent the past five seasons as an assistant athletic trainer with the Indians, whose medical staff was honored in 2007 as the best in baseball by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and Baseball Prospectus. Before that, Kenny was an assistant athletic trainer for the Reds from 2003-2004.
Kenny replaces Nick Swartz, who announced his retirement from the Royals on Sept. 25 after 33 years of service.
"We have hired one of the most highly respected trainers in the game," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "Nick brings a high level of energy, enthusiasm and expertise to the Royals organization. I'm extremely confident that he will lead and direct our medical programs in a very progressive and dynamic manner."
Kenney and his wife, Patty, have four children: Paige, Colin, Nathan and Madison.
