World Series Predictions: Game 2
Experts expect Martinez to display vintage form in Bronx
The Philadelphia Phillies believe that Pedro Martinez is the right man in the right spot.
scheduled -- with a commanding 2-0 Series lead. Martinez, who owns a 219-100 lifetime record in the regular season, would be a good choice to pitch Game 2 under any circumstance. Of course, the 38-year-old appears to have settled in an especially ideal spot in this situation. As a right-hander, he's an ideal choice to pitch between Lee and fellow southpaw Cole Hamels, who's scheduled to start Game 3 for Philadelphia on Saturday. Although Martinez received a no-decision in his only other start this postseason, his wasn't an ordinary effort. He surrendered just two hits in seven shutout innings in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium, but the Phillies' offense took a rare vacation as Los Angeles triumphed, 2-1. Interestingly, Martinez has faced Derek Jeter more than any other hitter during his career. The Yankees captain has amassed 99 regular-season plate appearances against Martinez, batting just .256 (22-for-86) with three home runs and only six RBIs. Other Yankees hitters familiar with Martinez include Jorge Posada (.183, 11-for-60), Alex Rodriguez (.291, 16-for-55), Hideki Matsui (.143, 4-for-28) and Robinson Cano (.000, 0-for-12). The Yankees will counter with right-hander A.J. Burnett, who has no record with a 4.42 ERA in three postseason starts this year after finishing 13-9 with a 4.04 ERA in the regular season.
