Greinke tallies Players Choice honor

Kansas City ace is named AL's Outstanding Pitcher

10/28/09 3:01 PM ET

KANSAS CITY -- The honors just keep coming for Royals pitcher Zack Greinke. Can the American League Cy Young Award be far behind?

Greinke picked up his third major award on Wednesday, when he was named the AL's Outstanding Pitcher as part of the Major League Baseball Players Association's Players Choice Awards.

The other AL finalists were the Yankees' CC Sabathia and the Blue Jays' Roy Halladay. Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals was named the NL's Outstanding Pitcher. The voting is done by Major League players in late September.

Greinke designated his cash prize to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

Earlier Greinke was picked as the AL's top pitcher by The Sporting News and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The league's Cy Young Award winner will be announced on Nov. 17.

Greinke had a 16-8 record for 25 percent of the Royals' 65 victories and led the Majors with a 2.16 ERA.
