Rays outright Richard to Triple-A

Veteran first baseman has option to become free agent

10/30/09 3:39 PM ET

ST. PETERSBURG -- Chris Richard has been outrighted to Triple-A Durham.

The veteran first baseman hit .263 with 24 homers and 75 RBIs in 100 games for Durham in 2009 before joining the Rays in September after Carlos Pena went on the disabled list.

Richard, 35, batted .105 in 19 at-bats for the Rays. In 280 career Major League games with the Orioles, Cardinals, Rockies and Rays, Richard has a .255 batting average with 34 home runs and 122 RBIs.

Richard now has the option of becoming a free agent if he chooses not to join Durham.
