Rangers interview hitting-coach hopefuls

GM Daniels expects decision to be made in coming days

11/02/09 10:39 PM EST

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers could have a new hitting coach in the next day or two, but they have yet to make a final decision after interviewing four candidates on Monday.

Rangers Hall of Famer Rusty Greer and former Major League hitting coaches Thad Bosley, Clint Hurdle and Gerald Perry all met with club officials on Monday at the Ballpark in Arlington. Each candidate went through a two-hour interview.

"All four guys bring something different to the party," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "All are qualified, they all understand and talked about similar team-first play that we're looking for. We couldn't go wrong with all four."

Daniels said the Rangers will "sleep on it" and talk among themselves more again on Tuesday.

"We should be able to reach a decision pretty soon," Daniels said.

Greer is the only one of the four who has not been a Major League hitting coach. He has not worked in professional baseball since his playing career ended in 2002 but spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach under former Rangers pitcher Mike Jeffcoat at Texas Wesleyan. He has also worked as a Collegiate Summer League coach.

Bosley was a hitting coach for the Athletics in 1999-2002, working on the same staff was Washington. Hurdle was the Colorado Rockies hitting coach from 1997-2002 before replacing Buddy Bell as manager. Perry has been a hitting coach for the past 10 seasons with the Mariners in 2000-02, the Pirates in 2003-05, the Athletics in 2006 and finally the Cubs beginning in 2007.
