Ratings for Game 5 championship caliber

World Series pulling in viewers at highest level in five years

11/03/09 6:45 PM EST

Another big television crowd tuned into Game 5 of the World Series, giving FOX its biggest Monday night audience since the 2008 BCS Championship game.

That was on Jan. 7, 2008, when LSU beat Ohio State for college football's national title. With 17.1 million people tuning in, the Yankees and Phillies outdrew that game, as Philadelphia forced the World Series back to New York with an 8-6 win.

There was an eight percent increase over the television audience for last year's Game 5, when the Phillies beat the Rays to clinch the World Series championship. Monday's Yankees-Phillies game was the most-watched World Series Game 5 since the Yankees and Marlins squared off in 2003.

Through five games, the 2009 World Series has averaged 18.7 million viewers, a 38 percent increase over last year, helped by the inclusion of the world's largest media market.

This year's Fall Classic netted the highest five-game average since the 2004 World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals.
