Padilla accidentally shoots himself in leg

Injury to hurler not considered to be serious

11/03/09 11:07 PM EST

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla accidentally shot himself in the right leg, the Dodgers confirmed Tuesday, but the wound is believed to be minor.

Padilla's agent, Adam Katz, notified the team of the pitcher's injury, which was suffered in his native Nicaragua. Padilla was treated at a Managua hospital and released.

Padilla, 32, was signed by the Dodgers after his August release by Texas. He went 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA for the Dodgers during the stretch run, pitched seven scoreless innings in the Division Series clincher against the Cardinals and allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings with a no-decision in the Dodgers' Game 2 win over the Phillies in the League Championship Series. Then he was battered for six runs in three-plus innings when the Dodgers were eliminated in Game 5.

Padilla earned $12 million in 2009 and is looking for a multi-year contract. The Dodgers in recent years have limited most contracts for free-agent pitchers to one season.
