Nats claim Slaten off waivers

Lefty reliever spent four years in D-backs bullpen

11/05/09 1:37 PM EST

The Nationals claimed reliever Doug Slaten off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Slaten went 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA and 13 holds in 126 career appearances for the D-backs spanning 2006-09. During his four-year big league career, he suffered just one blown save, stranded 77 percent of inherited baserunners and limited left-handed batters to a .322 on-base percentage.

The 29-year-old 6-foot-5 lefty pitched in 11 games for Arizona this season -- posting a 7.11 ERA -- but spent the majority of the season in Triple-A Reno, going 3-2 with a 3.09 ERA and nine saves in 39 games.

Slaten, a 17th-round Draft pick in 2000, enjoyed his best season in '07, when he sported a 2.72 ERA in 61 games as the D-backs won the National League West.
