Guzman, Towers opt for free agency

Former Yankees had been outrighted to Minor Leagues

11/11/09 3:14 PM EST

After being taken off the 40-man roster and outrighted to the Minor Leagues by the Yankees, outfielder Freddy Guzman and right-hander Josh Towers elected free agency on Wednesday, according to The Journal News (Westchester County, N.Y.).

Guzman played for four different organizations in 2009 and was dealt from the Orioles to the Yankees in September. In 10 games for New York, he went 1-for-6 with an RBI and four stolen bases. The 28-year-old got one plate appearance -- a strikeout -- in the American League Championship Series against the Angels.

Towers signed with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in May after his release from the Nationals. While there, he went 7-6 with a 3.05 ERA in 20 games (18 starts). The 32-year-old finished making two regular-season appearances for the Yanks, giving up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for a 3.38 ERA.
