Eyre files for free agency

If lefty doesn't retire, he'll only return to Phillies in 2010

11/12/09 6:13 PM EST

PHILADELPHIA -- Left-hander Scott Eyre filed for free agency Thursday.

The Phillies said Eyre had successful surgery Monday to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. The Phillies said they would contact Eyre's agent about a possible return in 2010. Eyre has said he could retire, but if he does not, he only would play for the Phillies.

Eyre, who made $2 million this season, went 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 42 appearances. He went 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 19 appearances for the Phillies in 2008.
