Red Sox announce non-roster invitees

Kelly among 20 headed to big league camp in Fort Myers

02/05/10 5:09 PM ET

The Red Sox announced Friday the 20 non-roster invitees who will take part in Major League Spring Training in Fort Myers, Fla., later this month.

At least one or two bullpen spots are expected to be up for an open competition this spring, and with that in mind, Boston invited 10 non-roster pitchers, consisting of right-handers Randor Bierd, Fernando Cabrera, Casey Kelly, Adam Mills, Edwin Moreno, Joe Nelson, Jorge Sosa and Kyle Weiland, as well as lefties Kris Johnson and Brian Shouse.

Also heading to camp will be catchers Luis Exposito and Gustavo Molina; infielders Lars Anderson, Yamaico Navarro, Angel Sanchez and Gil Velazquez; and outfielders Zach Daeges, Ryan Kalish, Che-Hsuan Lin and Darnell McDonald.

Half of those invited to camp have previous Major League experience, including Cabrera, Velazquez -- both of whom saw action with the Red Sox in 2009 -- Bierd, McDonald, Molina, Moreno, Nelson, Sanchez, Shouse and Sosa.

But perhaps the most intriguing player to watch will be Kelly, the 2008 first-round Draft pick who has given up shortstop in order to pitch full-time.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Feb. 18, and their first on-field workout will come two days later. The Red Sox's first full-squad workout is slated for Feb. 24.

All workouts take place at the team's Player Development Complex, located at 4301 Edison Avenue in Fort Myers. The team will then move its spring operations to City of Palms Park when Grapefruit League games begin on March 3.
