Stairs to get spot on Padres' roster
Left-hander Thatcher expected to start season on DL
ANAHEIM -- Padres manager Bud Black has informed veteran Matt Stairs he has made the club as a left-handed weapon off the bench. It will not be made official until a roster spot is cleared sometime this weekend.
Southpaw Joe Thatcher (left shoulder) is expected to open the season on the 15-day disabled list. Thatcher's condition is improving, Black indicated, but he hasn't had enough work this spring to build arm strength. Thatcher has made two appearances, retiring all six hitters he has faced.
Stairs is batting .207 in Cactus League play with one homer and four RBIs in 29 at-bats. He brings a respected veteran presence to the late innings. Stairs made two starts this spring at first base and five as a designated hitter.
