SEATTLE -- The Orioles claimed Pedro Viola off waivers from the Reds on Wednesday, then optioned the left-hander to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 26-year-old Viola has nine games of Major League experience -- all registered with Cincinnati in 2009 -- and a 5.14 ERA in that seven-inning span. In '09, he also appeared in 54 games for Triple-A Louisville, going 2-2 with a 5.47 ERA and eight saves. This year, Viola, who was designated for assignment on April 11 -- has registered one shutout inning at Triple-A.
In order to clear room on their 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred outfielder Felix Pie from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Pie is expected to miss three months because of a torn latissimus dorsi muscle.
