MINNEAPOLIS -- Tigers catcher Gerald Laird left Tuesday's game against the Twins with a bruised left shin and is considered day-to-day.
Laird, behind the plate for Tigers starter Dontrelle Willis, suffered the injury on a foul ball while batting in the top of the fifth inning. He grounded out to short to end the at-bat, then was replaced by Alex Avila to catch the bottom of the inning.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland already had planned to start the rookie Avila behind the plate for Wednesday afternoon's series finale, giving Laird what amounts to two days off when combined with Thursday's scheduled off-day.
Laird is batting .141 this year with a home run and three RBIs. He has been sharing time with Avila recently, but the veteran Laird has been getting the bulk of the playing time.
