Roundup: Phils, Padres make deals, walk off

07/30/10 3:10 AM ET

Thursday's Major League Baseball headlines had a lot to do with the flurry of activity two days before the non-waiver Trade Deadline, but there was plenty of action and intrigue in between the lines on the field as August's pennant-race ramp-up got a bit closer.

Most of the day's big-time buyers became winners.

The Phillies added ace Roy Oswalt in a deal with the Astros and then went out and won their eighth consecutive game, beating the D-backs on Wilson Valdez's walk-off single in the 11th. The Padres traded for Miguel Tejada and then walked off winners against the Dodgers when Oscar Salazar drove in the game-winner with a pinch-hit single. And the Rangers got an extra bat from the Marlins in Jorge Cantu and then took a win from the A's on the strength of homers by Taylor Teagarden and David Murphy.

The Nationals also won a game Thursday, taking advantage of good work from their returning starter, Scott Olsen, and departing closer Matt Capps. Capps nailed down his 26th save of the year Thursday before finding out he'd been shipped to the Twins, who were idle Thursday.

Elsewhere, more highlights were hit, even if a long-awaited one wasn't.

Alex Rodriguez will have to wait at least one more game after not belting career home run No. 600 against the Indians, but Robinson Cano hit his 20th dinger of the year and the Yankees routed the Tribe, 11-4, at Progressive Field, helping them keep pace with a two-game lead in the American League East over the victorious Rays.

In Denver, right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez bounced back from a personal slump and pitched his team out of an eight-game skid by notching his 16th victory with a win over the Pirates. And more mound magic came from Marlins righty Anibal Sanchez, who spun a one-hitter over the Giants at AT&T Park and halted Giants rookie catcher Buster Posey's 20-game hitting streak in the process.

Phillies 3, D-backs 2
Hours after bolstering their rotation with the acquisition of Roy Oswalt from Houston, the Phillies earned their eighth straight win thanks to Wilson Valdez's walk-off single in the 11th inning. Wrap >

Yankees 11, Indians 4
Alex Rodriguez's eagerly anticipated 600th home run didn't materialize, but the Yankees provided plenty for the highlight reels thanks to their seven-run seventh off the Indians' bullpen after Mitch Talbot was injured. Wrap >

Rangers 7, A's 4
Michael Young and Josh Hamilton totaled seven hits, David Murphy and Taylor Teagarden homered and the Rangers ended a seven-game homestand by topping the A's. Wrap >

White Sox 9, Mariners 5
For the second straight night Seattle grabbed an early lead only to see the White Sox storm back for a victory. Ramon Castro clubbed two of Chicago's four home runs as the White Sox finished 9-1 against the Mariners. Wrap >

Orioles 6, Royals 5
On the day they hired Buck Showalter to be their new manager, the Orioles tied the game in the eighth inning on Corey Patterson's solo homer, and won it in the 11th after Ty Wigginton drove in Brian Roberts with a sac fly. Wrap >

Rockies 9, Pirates 3
Ubaldo Jimenez claimed win No. 16, his first since the All-Star break, as the Rockies used a four-run second to end their eight-game slide. Wrap >

Rays 4, Tigers 2
David Price became the AL's first 14-game winner, and Carlos Pena had four RBIs as Tampa Bay completed a four-game sweep. Wrap >

Marlins 5, Giants 0
Anibal Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter in 2006, was nearly as dominant on Thursday, holding the Giants to three baserunners -- and one hit -- in the Marlins' easy win. Wrap >

Mets 4, Cardinals 0
Falling two outs shy of his second career shutout and complete game, R.A. Dickey had his knuckler dancing, holding the Cards to four hits, while Ike Davis provided the big blow with a three-run shot in the rubber game. Wrap >

Nationals 5, Braves 3
Ian Desmond and Adam Dunn each hit solo home runs and Wil Nieves had a two-run single as the Nationals delivered a win for Scott Olsen in his first game off the DL. Wrap >
