Ethier out of action for child's birth
Dodgers' bench already shorthanded following trades
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Dodgers faced the Giants on Saturday without All-Star outfielder Andre Ethier, who flew home to Los Angeles to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.
Ethier texted manager Joe Torre with news he had been summoned home. Torre said he did not know how long Ethier would be away from the club.
Garret Anderson started in right field for the Dodgers on Saturday.
Because Blake DeWitt had been traded and Ryan Theriot had not yet reported, the Dodgers played Saturday's game with only three position players on the bench -- outfielder Xavier Paul, catcher Brad Ausmus and infielder Ronnie Belliard.
