Howard lands on 15-day DL
Phillies slugger replaced on roster by Mayberry Jr.
PHILADELPHIA -- It sounded Sunday like Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard might miss just a few days because of a sprained left ankle.
It sounded Monday like it could be much longer.
On Tuesday, the club announced that their slugger has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate ankle sprain.
Howard flew to Philadelphia on Tuesday to have team physician Michael Ciccotti examine his ankle after he injured it trying to get back to second base on a play in the first inning of Sunday's victory over Washington at Nationals Park. Howard had to be helped off the field, but Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said after the game he did not think Howard, who left the ballpark on crutches, would need to be placed on the DL.
"I hope not," Manuel said then. "He's going to be OK. I don't expect him to miss very much time. It's going to be a short period."
Howard sounded less certain than his manager.
"It hurts," he said. "It's swollen. It's tight. It's sore. I'm hoping [not to be placed on the disabled list]. I guess once the swelling kind of goes down we'll see what happens."
To take Howard's spot on the 25-man roster, the Phillies recalled outfielder John Mayberry Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Mayberry, 26, was hitting .258 (99-for-383) with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 99 games for the IronPigs this season.
Howard joins second baseman Chase Utley and Shane Victorino on the disabled list. He is also the team's 15th player to be sidelined this season. That list includes Utley, Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Carlos Ruiz, Brian Schneider, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ, Jamie Moyer, Brad Lidge, J.C. Romero, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin and Antonio Bastardo.
Left fielder Raul Ibanez missed Sunday's game because of a sore left wrist. He sounded optimistic he could play in Tuesday's series opener against the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.
