Phelps named to U.S. Pan Am team

CLEVELAND -- Indians prospect Cord Phelps was named to the Pan American Qualifying Team roster by USA Baseball on Friday.

Phelps plays second base for Triple-A Columbus, but began his season at Double-A Akron. In 119 games at both levels this season, Phelps hit .308 with eight homers and 54 RBIs.

One of 24 players on the team, Phelps will play in the COPABE Pan Am Games qualifying tournament beginning Oct. 1 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Acta hopes Tribe learns from marathon

CLEVELAND -- The Indians had a day off Thursday to recover from Wednesday's marathon, 16-inning loss to the Angels, and from the cross-country return trip to begin a six-game homestand.

Tribe skipper Manny Acta reflected on Wednesday's 4-3 result in his spare time, saying it should be a learning experience for his young team.

"You get a feel for those [long games] when you've been around the game," Acta said. "When those things happen, it looks like nobody wants it. Both teams had plenty of opportunities, but they put so much pressure on themselves trying to end it, trying to overdo things."

Acta praised Cleveland's relief corps, which went 10 innings in relief of Josh Tomlin. Tribe relievers walked six Angels hitters, but gave up just three hits. Stretched to the limits by Wednesday's workload, the bullpen may have needed the rest more than anyone.

"I was very encouraged by the way we pitched," Acta said. "Especially our bullpen, throwing 10 innings and allowing only three hits. That's a positive we got out of that one."

Hafner back in the lineup

CLEVELAND -- Travis Hafner was back in the Indians lineup Friday after taking a day off Wednesday.

Manager Manny Acta called a few numbers off the bench as Wednesday's 16-inning affair spiraled onward, but not Hafner's. Sparing the slugger's shoulder, Acta had no intention of using Hafner against the Angels.

"Usually when he takes a day off, he doesn't even take batting practice or anything, just to rest his shoulder," Acta said. "It's kind of tough for us to ramp him up real quick, 5, 10, 15 minutes before he's going to come up to the plate and risk him doing something to his shoulder."

Keeping Hafner out of the box may have worked to the Angels' advantage in pulling out the 4-3 win, but Acta certainly didn't look at it that way.

"When Hafner gets the day off, it's not because I'm trying to put a weaker lineup out there," Acta said. "It's because I'm trying to rest his shoulder."

Worth noting

Indians starting pitchers had pitched at least five innings in 16 straight games and in 18 of their last 19 entering Friday's series opener with the Twins. ... Chris Perez has a 0.65 ERA since June 28, allowing just two earned runs in 27 2/3 innings over that stretch. Perez anchors a Tribe bullpen that entered Friday with a 4.13 ERA on the season, good enough for ninth in the American League. ... The Indians will host a blood drive Wednesday, Sept. 15, on Gateway Plaza between Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena. The blood drive will go from noon to 8 p.m. ET, and the Tribe will play the Angels that night beginning at 7:05. Donors will receive a T-shirt and a seat cushion.
