NEW YORK -- Win the sweepstakes, witness the sweep?
That was the plan on Saturday night for Yankees fan Lauren Vasil, who won a pair of tickets to Game 3 of the American League Division Series between the Yankees and Twins. Vasil's free ride to the game came courtesy of Yankees Universe and some personal persistence.
Like a lot of people, Vasil fills out online sweepstakes all the time. Like a lot of people, she never wins. Well, until now.
"One day, someone called and said I got tickets. I didn't believe them," Vasil said. "It's awesome."
Vasil wisely decided to take her boyfriend -- "a pretty big Yankee fan" himself, in her words -- to the game, the first postseason contest held in the Bronx since the Bombers clinched their 27th World Series championship against the Phillies last November.
The seats in the upper deck along the third-base line provided a nice view of the action on a perfect autumn night.
"I wouldn't sell these tickets for anything," Vasil said. "How else do you get a chance for tickets for free to a Yankees game? I don't care where you sit; it's always a good seat in the house."
As proof of her dedication to the Yankees, she made it to the game in the middle of the first inning -- all the way from Pennsylvania after running a 5K race earlier on Saturday. It promised to be a long day for the resident of Bayside, Queens, but one well worth it with a possible Yankees victory.
Don't infer anything from where Vasil lives now, by the way; growing up in Hamilton, N.J., she was a tried-and-true Yankees fan.
"In my family, when you're born, you're born Yankee and Giants fans," she said.
As such, Vasil joined Yankees Universe this season, mainly so she could -- don't tell anybody -- listen to day games at work as an online marketer. She took advantage of the ticket discounts as well, making a number of trips to Yankee Stadium with family and friends.
Along with MLB.com At-Bat and Gameday Audio, members in Yankees Universe receive fast-track entrance at the Stadium and the Yankees Museum, as well as discounts at the online shop at yankees.com.
Vasil, who was at Yankee Stadium when the Bombers clinched the AL pennant last season against the Angels, was looking forward to the chance to see them win another clinching postseason game and take a big step toward repeating as World Series champions.
"I'm hoping I'm good luck," she said. "It would be very nice."
