WASHINGTON -- The Nationals are out of the Carl Pavano sweepstakes, MLB.com has confirmed. Published reports have indicated that the right-hander is set to re-sign with the Twins.

"I'm not in any active talks with the Nationals," Pavano's agent, Tom O'Connell, said Thursday night.

The Nats have been looking for a top-of-the-rotation starter since the offseason began, but they have come up empty-handed. They were in the mix as far as trying to acquire free-agent pitchers Cliff Lee and Brandon Webb, but Lee and Webb signed with the Phillies and Rangers, respectively.

Washington tried to acquire Zack Greinke in a trade with Kansas City, but Greinke used his no-trade clause and rejected the deal to the Nationals.
