MIAMI -- Cuban baseball standout Yasiel Balaguer is training in South Florida, but he did not conduct a workout for the Marlins on Wednesday, according to a source.
Internally, the club has discussed whether to consider signing the 18-year-old outfielder, who arrived in Miami in November after leaving Cuba while traveling to Mexico.
MLB.com confirmed on Wednesday that the Marlins had internal interest. At the time, it was believed the outfielder, who has drawn comparisons with Andruw Jones, would be working out for the team in the afternoon. But no workout was conducted.
The source also discounted details of a Miami New Times report that stated Balaguer was seeking $18 million to $20 million. "That is inaccurate," the source said, adding no workouts for Balaguer have been scheduled for any specific teams.
